Session 4 - December 13th - Santa's Solar System Solution

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Miss Ladbrook, Miss Burns and Mrs Coughlan would like to wish all the girls, their families and Headteachers and staff at our partnership Primary Schools a very Happy Christmas and New Year! We look forward to seeing you at our next SHINE session on Saturday 10th January 2015.

SANTA’S SOLAR SYSTEM SOLUTION

Mrs Lynch led our fourth session where the girls had tremendous fun learning about the Solar System. They first had to think of a mnemonic to help them remember the planets in order of their distance from the Sun. Well done to Catelin who devised a fantastic mnemonic: ‘My Very Emerald Mobile Just Stopped Using Network’.

The girls then learnt about the features of each planet. They understood the differences between the rocky planets e.g. Venus and the gas giants e.g. Neptune. The girls were then required to apply their understanding of the planetary features to advise Santa Claus on which planet would be best for him to visit and take his presents to the children who live in Space! The girls applied their knowledge of the planets distance from the Sun; time to spin on axis, time to orbit the Sun, diameter and temperature of each of the planets. The girls all agreed that Mars would be the most suitable planet for Santa to visit and all wrote a letter to him to explain why.

After our morning break, the girls then enjoyed making Christmas Cards for their families based on what they had learnt about the planet Mars. Some wonderful designs were created and they had tremendous fun applying the glitter! Unfortunately, Miss Ladbrook became covered in silver glitter when trying to open the pot – it provided endless laughter and entertainment for the girls!

Thank you very much indeed to Mrs Lynch for leading such a wonderful session.

'A Baby Girl' - Congratulations to Kaitlyn - her new baby sister, Rosie, was born on Friday 5th December weighing 6Ibs 10oz

Birthday Girl

Everyone at SHINE would like to wish Emily a big happy birthday, we hope the rest of your birthday is as good as your morning, enjoy the cinema.  From all your friends at SHINE.

Session 3 - December 6th - Making the International News

This girls worked in groups to make a news broadcast which they then filmed in the green room.  Miss Tickle explained that in each group they would need an anchor, who would film all the links and several reporters and interviewees.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed adding details to their studio scripts and practising accents to become William the Conquerer and Christopher Columbus.

One girl in each group took on the part of Kate Sheppard, who fought for the right for women to vote in New Zealand and another became Dr Frank Jenner, whose team played an important role in stopping smallpox.

After rehearsing and trying on costumes the girls acted their scripts out in the green room.  It was brilliant fun and the girls really got into character.  To finish the girls enjoyed playing the part of a newspaper journalist and creating their own news stories for the Daily Shine.

The girls are looking forward to seeing the finished news reports, thank you to miss Tickle for organising such a fun morning.
